Ella Sri Lanka Unveiled: Towards a heaven in a gem

The Enchanting Town of Ella

Sri Lanka, a tropical heaven celebrated for its crystal-clear shores, verdant tea fields, and deep cultural roots, is gradually emerging from the dark times it faced recently.

Among the many stunning destinations that await travelers, there is one lesser-known gem that promises to captivate both local and international visitors: Ella. Located in the core of Sri Lanka's hill country, Ella provides a peaceful retreat with stunning views, thrilling activities, and a delightful atmosphere of the locals.

How to Get to Ella??

Colombo —> Ella (Train) For those of you who do not want to spend 11 hours on a bus from the capital city, there is good alternative. By Train — Most common and picturesque route which will give you a chance to see the magnificent greenery, lush tea estates around.

Train Journey

Begin your journey from Colombo Fort Railway Station. My suggestion is that, take the train ride on Colombo to Badulla line where you can experience an unforgettable scenic beauty. It is a 7-9 hours journey by some of the other trains. One of the best ways to reach Ella from Kandy is with a comfy train called The TrainElla Express/ Udarata Menike(9001). This trek is popular among tourists and you can also book your launch in advance especially if peak season.

By Car

Another option is to drive or book a cab from Colombo. The journey covers approximately 200 kilometers and should take between 4 to 5 hours, varying based on traffic and the state of the roads. The drive itself is enjoyable, meandering through scenic views, tea fields, and quaint villages.

Highlights - The Charm of Ella

1. Ella Rock

Ella Rock in one of the major attractions for hikers visiting Ella.

Trekking to Ella Rock is not easy…but the view from there worth it. The climb will take 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and you can see stunning views of the surrounding valleys, mountains teafarms. The hike is moderate in difficulty, so you will want to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring lots of water.

2.  Nine Arches Bridge

The Nine Arches Bridge is another of Kandy's iconic landmarks that was part of colonial architectural ventures. It is a 91-metre-long bridge made out of bricks and cement that spans greenery, in the midst of tea estates. The Golden Gate Bridge is at its most striking in early morning and late afternoon light — looming large, with contrasts so dramatic that any moving object on the walkway or roadway is frozen against a backdrop of darkness.

3. Little Adam’s Peak

For those looking for a less strenuous hike, Little Adam’s Peak offers a relatively easy trek with rewarding views. The hike to the summit takes about 1-1.5 hours and provides panoramic vistas of Ella and the surrounding mountains. It's a perfect spot for sunrise or sunset views.

4. Ravana Falls & Tea Factory Visits

Ravana Falls is one of Sri Lanka’s widest waterfalls, located just a short drive from Ella. The falls are named after the legendary king Ravana from the Ramayana epic. A visit to the falls offers a refreshing experience, especially if you’re up for a dip in the cool waters.

Ella known for Tea estates. A visit to one of the local tea factories, for example Halpewatte Tea Factory offers a chance to see how Ceylon tean is made and sample some high-quality brewed teas. These guided tours feature a walk through the verdant tea estates and an insight into the history and culture of Ceylon Tea production.
